(We stopped for lunch on a closed bridge over a small river.)
Technical details of the journey:
-Had a quick swim in the morning, then packed up from Miles City KOA. Ollie scratched the paint on the outside and ripped the upholstery on the inside of the truck.
-Drove down the interstate to Forsyth, then took Rt 12 to 87. Stopped for road construction and the guy holding the sign told us that driving around there was like driving on a treadmill—the scenery never changes.
-Went through Lewiston and Great Falls. We perceived an attitude in Lewiston that our east coast liberal sensibilities might not be appreciated, so we went on to Great Falls. It looked like an interesting town, but everything was closed by the time we got there (830 pm).
-Headed South on 15 towards Helena. Couldn’t find an affordable hotel, so at 1030 when we had seen half a dozen deer on the road we decided it wasn’t too safe to drive. We found a tiny campground with no water or plumbing right beside the Missouri river and set up the tent in the dark.
-Truck is getting about 25mpg with mostly highway driving around 75mph. Costs about $75/tank which gets us 450 miles.
-Truck doesn’t like to do big hills in top gear, but otherwise is working well. We just went over 5000 miles since new (4000 on this trip) so we’ll get an oil change when we’re back in Bozeman.
Social details of the journey:
Today was a bit of a nadir. Morale has slumped, perhaps due to miles of unchanging desert scenery in intense heat, or seeing dozens of abandoned and dilapidated towns, or running low on money and skimping on food and lodging, or not having more than one person to talk to, or trying to look for jobs two thousand miles away, or maybe just a cat who can’t keep his claws out of us or our stuff. Please pray for God to give us courage, patience, and trust. And to help Cara find a job. And for our friend Randle. And for my brother and sister-in-law Tony & Carolyn (their baby is due any day!).
